Since I started POTW, all of a sudden I am doing things and meeting very interesting people. On this day, a friend of mine invited me to try piloting a plane for the first time. I really didn’t know how to feel about the whole thing and I still think I need to do it again for it to sink in. The experience was so adrenaline filled and being up there was just a magical feeling. Scary at first but in all moments, a good time. The friend who took me is a flight instructor so while he went flying with a student, I was left waiting for my turn. Of course I went up to Carlos and spoke to him a bit about his life and what he does. He was very calm, quiet, and somehow very nimble. Looking at him work in his bubble was mesmerising. Finally, I found the nerve to ask him to say a few words for POTW. Here is Carlos Martinez.

Who is Carlos?
My name is Carlos Martinez. I’m from Leon (Spain). This is an airfield maintenance workshop and flight school that we opened here now 30 years ago.
How do you make your money?’
Well here in the airfield. I give flight classes, and repair airplanes. I’ve been in this business for 36 years now.
What do you do for fun?
Fly when I can without it being a class. Enjoy up there and all the amazing views that you see from there.
Words for anyone listening
Try aviation because it’s much different than what most people think it is like. It is less scary than it should be because of the perception people have so coming to try makes a big difference. From up there, you see things in a different light.

These days, going up to people with a reason to talk to them makes it so much easier to get into their lives a little for a minute. To me, it’s amazing to know that each time you come across someone, you have an opportunity to show whatever part of yourself or as many as you like you wish to and same goes for the other. Those around us are so used to wearing masks but somehow, sometimes you get them to open up and show something real about life. We can learn a lot from those around us.
